KIM'S GAME — THE TABLE DRILL

How to play Kim's Game

1. Press Lay the table. Objects appear — you have 10 seconds to commit them to memory (or drop the cloth early if you're ready).
2. One object is taken and the rest are rearranged.
3. Pick what vanished from six candidates. A correct call clears the round; a miss costs one of your three lives.
4. Rounds grow from 6 to 12 objects. Score is rounds cleared.

A drill with real spy-school history

Kim's Game takes its name from Rudyard Kipling's 1901 novel Kim, where the boy is trained for the Great Game of espionage by memorising trays of jewels. The exercise moved from fiction into real curricula: it has been used by military snipers, scout programs and intelligence services to build rapid observational memory — the ability to glance at a scene once and later report what was there, what changed, and what's missing.

Field notes

• Don't stare — sweep the table in a fixed order (left to right, top to bottom) so recall has a route to follow.
• Build a quick story linking the objects; narrative glue survives the rearrangement far better than a raw list.
• The rearrangement is the trap: position memory dies with it — anchor on identity, not the layout.
